The Marrakech Maze

Episode 3: The Marrakech Maze

Before Reading

  1. Medina: The historical old town of a city, typically characterized by narrow alleyways, bustling souks, and ancient architecture

  2. Souks: Markets

  3. Riad: A traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. Many riads, like El Fenn (featured hotel), have been converted into boutique hotels, offering a more authentic experience

Marrakech is a city that pulls you in immediately. It’s in the air—rich with spice, heat, and possibility. The medina hums with life, its labyrinth of alleyways alive with color and shadow. But tonight, it felt different, almost like it was holding its breath.

The clue from Utah led me here: “To a labyrinth’s heart, you must come.” If any place could be called a labyrinth, it’s this.. The medina is a maze in every sense, a place where it’s easy to lose track of time—or yourself.

I checked into El Fenn, a boutique sanctuary tucked into the chaos of the medina. Its bold colors and quiet courtyards felt like stepping into another world. The rooftop terrace? Perfetion. But tongiht, thetranquility would have to wait—there was work to do, and a puzzle waiting to make me question my intelligence.

THE SOUK AND THE SHOPKEEPER

The medina is a puzzle in itself. The twisting alley ways pull you deeper, disorienting and mesmerizing all at once. After weaving through the crowds—and side-stepping a snake charmer who was far too enthusiastic—I found myself in front of a small shop.

Navigating the medina isn’t for the faint of heart.

Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old wood and leather. Shelves were packed with antiques: aged pottery, silver jewelry, and boxes that could have easily held either priceless treasures or someone’s lunch.

The shopkeeper, an older man with piercing gaze, didn’t bother with pleasantries. He just reached behind the counter and handed me an item wrapped in cloth.

The cloth had a riddle written on top: “While you think, let the mosaic drink, and its soul shall rise to meet your eyes.”

Unwrapping it revealed a fragment of a mosaic tile, its patterns intricate and beautiful.

THE CLUE IN THE MOSAIC

Back at El Fenn, I studied the mosaic under the sot glow of the lanterns. It was beautiful—a kaleidoscope of blues, golds, and whites arranged in geometric precision. But nothing about it screamed “clue.”

Frustrated, I set it aside and poured a glass of water, A few drops spilled onto the tile, spreading across its surface. That’s when I saw it.

As the water soaked into the tile, an image began to emerge—a profile etched into the design It was subtle, but unmistakable: Michelangelo’s David.

It told me everything I needed to know. The next destination was Florence, the heart of the Renaissance.

AN UNEASY NIGHT

After solving the mosaic, I returned to the rooftop terrace at El Fenn, letting the warm breeze carry away the day’s tension. Yet, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.

Earlier, I'd noticed a figure lingering too long in the souk’s shadows, and the unease had followed me here. My instincts told me this wasn’t over.

I finished my mint tea, pocketed the mosaic tile, and returned to my suite. The puzzle had shifted, but the game was far from solved.

FORD’S HOTEL JOURNAL ENTRY

El Fenn is a masterpiece of color and calm in the heart of Marrakech. Its bold design—a mix of vibrant tiles, Moroccan textiles, and modern touches—creates an atmosphere both luxurious and inviting.

The rooftop terrace, with views stretching to the Atlas Mountains, is the perfect place to sip mint tea as the city comes alive below. The service is warm, intuitive, and effortlessly chic, making you feel like a guest in a private palace.

It’s a place where modern luxury meets timeless charm, and it has more than earned its place in my journal.
